Diglas brings delicatessen to the Gersthof market

On March 8, the new “Diglas am Markt” opens at Gersthofer Platzl. The best offers of the butcher’s shop Bauer are to be continued, in addition coffee and delicatessen. We took a look at the new business premises shortly before its completion.

Preparations in full swing

“The delicatessen goes here, the meat there, and the sandwiches there,” explains Markus Schneider-Diglas, pointing to the various corners of the new display case. It’s still empty, and the workmen are still busy. But it is already clearly recognizable how it will look in the former butcher’s shop Bauer starting from next week. And the range of products offered by the large Diglas family will definitely enrich the freshly remodeled Platzl.

Former saleswomen are back in businesst

When the Bauer couple retired last summer, the shock in the Grätzl was great. Good butchers are hard to find and Markus Schneider-Diglas wants to continue the good tradition as far as possible. That starts with the three sales assistants. After the closure in summer, they were employed at the Meierei in Türkenschanzpark and will return to their old jobs next week. The suppliers will also remain the same and Josef Bauer has announced that he will be on hand to offer advice and support. Of course, the meat offer will be significantly smaller, but the most important parts of beef and chicken will be in the assortment in any case.

Pastries from the Diglas universe

New to this are the pastries from the large Diglas gastronomy universe. Elisabeth Schneider-Diglas runs the Meierei in Türkenschanzpark. Her father owns the Diglas on Wollzeile and Fleischmarkt, and brother Hans runs the Café im Schottenstift, Café Westend, Café Weimar and Fischerbräu on Billrothstraße. The family has a purchasing and production community. The cakes come from the production at Fleischmarkt, the beer from the Wirtshaus brewery in Döbling and the coffee in the future from the own roasting in Gersthof.

New coffee from the Cottage Roasters

During the visit of “Unser Währing”, the large roasting machine is not yet completely finished. It is located at the very back at the corner of the Gersthofer Markt. Only Arabica beans from sustainable organic cultivation are processed. The naming of the “Cottage Roasters” is based on the surroundings.

One variety is called “Bastien” after a former mayor of Gersthof, “Ferro” after a former Viennese paramedic who also gave his name to Ferrogasse, and “Hohenau” after the old name of the highest point of Gersthof.

From the Meieier to the Platzl and back

Schneider-Diglas originally comes from an international group in the IT sector and you can tell that when you listen to him: It’s all about synergies between the companies, he says. What he means by this is that at Gersthofer Platzl, only chicken meat from organic production is available. In the future, the same supplier will also supply the Meierei in Türkenschanzpark. And if the Meierei runs out of cakes, they can be quickly delivered from the Platzl.

Wines, lunch menu and food vending machine

New in the offer is also a small but fine wine selection: With wines from Styria, from the Nußberg and from Hernals. A daily lunch menu is also planned. From Thursday to Saturday there will be spicy dishes, on Friday something sweet. The offer is intended primarily for take-away. There are eight tasting places in the restaurant itself, and as soon as the weather permits, there will also be eight places in the new guest garden. And the food vending machine, which was temporarily shut down due to the renovation, will also be reopened. In the future, it will be located a few meters further back, says Markus Schneider-Diglas. And he says goodbye for a talk with the next craftsman – so that everything will be ready by Tuesday.
